Thinking of Decorating? Use Pieces of Historical Interest

The history of Venetian Masks is truly remarkable and will make one more appreciative of the artistry that goes into the making of them. Though masks have been used for centuries in different cultures mostly for theater purposes, the Venetian Masks comes from Venice, which was once a powerful but very small republic, where the masks were used to conceal the identities of individuals during the day for privacy in personal dealings like financial and romantic meetings. Everyone used the masks whether servant or nobleman.

Over time the masks, becoming more elaborate and beautiful, began to be associated mostly with carnivals and masquerade parties.

During the time of the plague, doctors believed they were protected from the bad air by wearing a mask with a long beak called a Medico Della Peste. At the time it was believed that bad air caused the plague, thus the nursery rhyme "Ring Around the Roses".

Full Face Venetian masks, shown here as the Commedia mask, is my personal favorite. I identify it with the Greek tragedy masks. But I have not seen any as beautiful and elegant as this.

For those of you in the Internet world who are looking for some interesting pieces to decorate, Venetian Masks would make an interesting conversation piece.
